The Astronomical Observatory of the Centro Universitario Regional del Este (CURE), Universidad de la República, supports teaching, research, and community outreach. In addition to academic activities, the Observatory provides technical guidance to reduce light pollution and preserve dark skies. It is part of the University Development Pole (PDU) “Group for the Development of Physical Sciences and their Applications,” based at CURE’s Rocha headquarters. The Observatory is led by Prof. Adj. (G3) Dr. Andrea Sosa Oyarzabal and Asst. Prof. (G1) Valentina Pezano.
CURE Observatory is located in Rocha, Uruguay.
The facility’s main instrument is a 30 cm MEADE LX200 computerized reflector on an equatorial fork mount, paired with an SBIG STT 1603 ME CCD camera and filter wheel, on loan from the Faculty of Sciences. The observatory dome is a 2.4 m motorized, automatable REB Ash-Dome, acquired with funding from the Physical Sciences PDU. Construction was completed under the direction of Alberto Ceretta and Alejandro Pereira, and the Observatory was inaugurated on September 2, 2016.
