Observatory Overview
Location: Namur, Belgium
Model: 14’6″ (4.42m) Model REB Ash-Dome with Automation
At the Université de Namur in Belgium, the new observatory will serve as an exceptional place for education, offering students as well as local kids and teens the chance to discover astronomy with state-of-the-art equipment and gain an inspiring first experience that may shape them for life. The project is led by Dr. André Füzfa, professor of mathematics at the university.
The observatory is dedicated to Antoine Thomas, a mathematician, Jesuit priest, and later imperial astronomer in Beijing.
Born in Namur in 1644, just a few hundred meters from the observatory site, Thomas represents a natural namesake given the Jesuits’ role in founding the university in 1831 and establishing its first observatory in 1883.
